FRINGE MUSIC :: A Night by Jamal Gray
Elijah Easton (saxophone) is a powerhouse! Easton’s resonant, honeyed melodies and upbeat tempos will bring you joy and tranquility. Allen Jones (drums) Jones is a well-known and much-loved drummer from Washington, D.C. A former student of the highly-acclaimed Duke Ellington Center for the Arts, he has made himself indispensable to many different groups and genres within the District.
Jamal Gray is a musician, organizer, and curator born and raised in Washington, DC.

This evening was organized by long-time Fringe Music Curator Luke Stewart. Luke is a composer-improviser, bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and organizer known for his work as a soloist, leader of his Exposure Quintet, with Edward Wilkerson, Jr., Ken Vandermark, Jim Baker, and Avreeayl Ra, and member of groups including Blacks’ Myths, Heart of the Ghost, Six Six, Irreversible Entanglements, and Heroes Are Gang Leaders, a literary free jazz ensemble that was awarded the 2018 American Book Award for Oral Literature.
Stewart has co-run DC jazz advocacy nonprofit CapitalBop since 2010, curating the organization’s longstanding “Loft Jazz” concert series and writing music criticism for its website. In 2020, he was included among DownBeat’s “25 for the Future” as an artist who “shapes the artistic landscape”. Join in to see and feel found.

FREE FRINGE MUSIC :: Janel & Anthony

Both musicians, together and separately, have long been an important and active part of Washington D.C.’s new-music scene. Anthony Pirog, an omnivorous, multi-faceted guitarist who studied jazz at Berklee and has performed country, fingerstyle, rock, and surf music, and Janel Leppin, a conservatory-trained cellist steeped in North Indian and Persian classical music, who also plays electric bass in rock bands, have created a lavishly detailed musical journey, by turns ravishing and harrowing. Janel and Anthony alternately charm and challenge, with music that draws from classical, experimental, jazz, rock, and electronic traditions but that ultimately is simply theirs. Join in to feel good and chill out.

Amy K Bormet is a pianist, vocalist, and composer, known for her fearless and free-wheeling style and dedication to creating new music. To collaborate with and celebrate women musicians, she founded the annual Washington Women in Jazz Festival.
Amy will be joined by her trio (Amy K Bormet, keyboard/vocals, Karine Chapdelaine, bass Angel Bethea, drums) and her newest trio No Trick Pony (Amy K Bormet, keyboard/vocals, Brian Settles, tenor saxophone, Keith Butler, drums). Join in to feel upbeat and a sense of the airy chill vibe.

Community Open Mic will start promptly at 3pm and run up until 5pm. Any talent you wish to perform or express is welcome! Onsite we will provide a guitar hook-up, two mics, can cord to play back-up track you provide. A prize of $50 and a gift bag with Georgetown Business discounts will be given to the individual or group who gets the loudest claps and yells from the audience. ANY TALENT!!! Underdog the dj, graphic design teacher in District of Columbia Public Schools, and community member DJ Underdog is an artist, educator, and sound and visual artist. Born in Panama, Underdog moved to DC at age seven with his mother and has since then his roots and their roots have spread not just all over the District but . . .the globe.
Underdog the dj has shared the stage with artists like Femi Kuti, Bad Brains, Sango, Zap Mama, Common, Black Coffee, Kelela, A Tribe Called Red, Questlove, and Thundercat; activated countless engagements, including Future R & Bass with Soulection. You can also hear him through Blackstar Radio on WPFW. Join in to feel the beats in your body on the final Saturday.
